How to Rotate a PDF That Opens Sideways (and Save It)

Scanned a PDF and it opens sideways or upside down? Here's how to rotate it permanently — so it stays fixed in every viewer — free and in your browser.

You open a PDF and it’s lying on its side, or upside down. You tilt your head, read it anyway, and move on — until you have to send it to someone and it looks unprofessional. The fix takes ten seconds, and the important part is making it stick so it opens straight for everyone, not just on your screen.

Why it happens

Every page in a PDF carries a hidden rotation value. Scanners and phone cameras frequently set it wrong — the image is fine, but the page is flagged to display rotated. Your PDF reader sometimes has a temporary “rotate view” button, but that only rotates it for you, right now; the file is unchanged, so the next person still sees it sideways.

To fix it for good you need to write the rotation into the file itself.

How to rotate and save it permanently

  1. Open the Rotate PDF tool.
  2. Add your PDF.
  3. Choose the direction — 90° right, 90° left, or 180° (upside down).
  4. Click Rotate PDF and download.

The downloaded file now opens correctly in every viewer — Adobe Reader, Chrome, your phone, and when printed. No quality is lost; rotating only changes a page property, it doesn’t re-render anything.

Rotate every page or just some

  • All pages the same way (the usual case for a sideways scan) — leave the page field empty and pick the angle.
  • Only specific pages — type their numbers, e.g. 2, 5-7. Handy when one page in a report came out rotated.
  • Each page differently — use the Organize PDF tool, which shows thumbnails with a rotate button on each, so you can fix a mix of orientations visually.

While you’re at it

If the sideways page came from a scan, two neighbours of this tool often help in the same session:

  • Crop PDF — trim the white scanner border around the page.
  • Merge PDF — if you fixed the rotation on one page that you’d split off, join it back with the rest.

Private by default

A sideways PDF is often a scan of something personal — an ID, a signed letter, a bill. Many “rotate PDF online” sites upload it to fix one property, which is overkill and a privacy risk. The Rotate PDF tool does it on your device: nothing is uploaded, and it works offline once loaded. Straighten it, save it, send it — without it ever leaving your computer.
